Pinkies & Piggies glass keepsakes . . . precious little hands and feet, preserved forevermore

Exhibitor: Whitehouse Glass
Contact Person: Rachel Nixon, Creator & Owner
Website: www.pinkiesandpiggies.com
Booth#: 913

My story:
After giving birth to my first child, Esther, in 2004, I searched for a special way to capture forever the beauty of her precious little hands and feet.I struck upon the idea of casting her hands and footprints in glass, as I am an artist, and glass is my favorite medium. It took a few tries, but before long, I had created exact replicas of Esther’s hands and feet and etched each with her name and birth date.Everyone who saw them was amazed by their incredible level of detail, down to the tiniest lines. Soon, people were asking me to create glass keepsakes for their babies—and the requests just kept on coming. In 2005, I dubbed my creations Pinkies & Piggies™ and began producing them from my studio, Whitehouse Glass, which is located in the little town of Whitehouse, Ohio.Whether you’re looking for a unique gift for a baby shower or want a keepsake for your own baby, I promise that it will be created with the same hand craftsmanship and attention to detail that went into my daughter’s.

I look forward to meeting you personally at the Indy Baby Expo!

Whimsical Décor for Children and Home

The Painted Polka Dot
Whimsical Décor for Children and Home

Once upon a time there were two mommies who wanted unique furnishings for their homes but didn't want to pay steep retail prices. These mommies began creating their own whimsical treasures by scouring old antique stores and reliable thrift stores for solid pieces of furniture, then recycling them with paint, fabric, and paper. The mommies soon realized that they could offer their services to the general public in an effort to create beautiful handcrafted home furnishings, including furniture and accessories, at a fraction of the cost of popular retail stores and boutiques.

It is our goal to create individual and one-of-a-kind furniture pieces and accessories to brighten up your home. We believe in the importance of our homes reflecting our spirits, and in the comfort of our personal space confines. Using old wooden picture frames, photo mats, clocks, lamps, shades, tin buckets and anything else that can be refurbished is the key to keeping our costs low and keeping originality high. Additionally, we are inspired by recycling items that might have overstayed their place in this world.

One of our guiltiest pleasures is to update and customize YOUR wooden pieces. Whether you've purchased a bare wood stool, believe in the durability of a well-worn dresser from your childhood, or find a great deal at a garage sale (our favorite!), we can give it new life AND implement your preferred color schemes.

Please visit www.paintedpolkadot.com for more information.

Curbing Those Icky Pregnancy Days

I was watching a show the other day when one of the pregnant characters complained that “morning sickness” needs a new name because it doesn’t just occur in the morning. I agree. I think they should call it “I’d rather stay in bed” days, “touch me and I might vomit on you” days, or even “don’t eat, chew or cook around me” days.

But, I have discovered a few tips that minimize the nausea.
1. Eat a few saltine crackers or dry toast before getting out of from bed in the morning. Just keep the crackers in your nightstand…or, if you are one of the lucky ones – train your man to make you some toast in the morning so you don’t have to get up. Then wait 15 minutes before rising.
2. Continue to snack throughout the day – as often as every hour or two. This includes having a small snack when you get up at night (come on, you’re pregnant…we know you will be getting up to pee).
3. The blander the snack, the better the nausea protector…think crackers, rice cakes, pretzels, etc.
4. Ginger products are supposed to sooth the tummy, as well…such as ginger ale, ginger tea, ginger candy or ginger snap cookies.
5. This is a given, but stay away from strong smells and try not to cook strong-smelling foods in areas without proper ventilation.
6. Stay hydrated! Keep that water bottle with you at all times.
7. Avoid fatty or spicy foods. These foods are hard for your stomach to digest and may trigger nausea.
8. Take your prenatal vitamins with food.
9. Vitamin B6 supplements are also said to be an effective nausea reliever.
10. Peppermint, either smelling it in aromatherapy form or sipping the tea can help curb nausea. It's also known to help with sagging energy levels.

As with all medications, don’t take any motion sickness or anti-nausea pills without checking with your doctor.

Do you have any tips or tricks to curb nausea that you would like to share with other moms-to-be? If so, please share your wisdom by replying to this blog. We want to know your secrets!

And, if you haven’t already done so, make sure that you add the Indy Baby Expo to your calendar! It is now just two months away…April 26th and 26th at the Indiana State Fairgrounds!

Unique Baby Proofing Tips

We all know about the clips that hold doors closed, safety covers for electrical outlets, etc. But have you heard of these practical, quick-fix baby-proofing ideas?

1. Sharp table corners. Slice open a tennis ball and wedge them over the corner of the table.
2. Slow down push toys. When little ones are learning to walk they tend to move at high speeds, and sometimes speeds while pushing toys can get to be too fast for their little feet to keep up with. To slow down push toys, put a rubber band around the front two wheels.
3. Keeping cabinets shut. Wrap a hair band around the knobs.
4. Kitchen sink rather than a bucket. Use the kitchen sink rather than a bucket when mopping floors. Buckets of water left unattended even for a few moments can present a drowning hazard – plus, by using the sink, you are keeping dangerous cleaning chemicals out of the infant’s reach.
5. Velcro. Drawers that you don’t want your infant to get into? Trouble finding where the baby has taken the remote? Try Velcro! This stuff has become so “super stick” that it takes some muscle to pull it apart.

I would love to hear your practical safety tips! Please post them if you have them!

Also, be sure to stop by the CP Morgan “safety house” at the Indy Baby Expo! There will be safety presentations by leading baby and infant safety experts. These engaging seminars will take place on both Saturday and Sunday at the Expo!

Thank you
Jenn

Pregnancy: Weigh It Out!

We spend a lot of our lives concerned about our weight – going from diet to diet, changing our exercise routines, etc. We lose a few pounds here and there, and no one really notices. And then we get pregnant. The second we make the admission to family and friends that we’re expecting, they start looking at our bellies…waiting, willing them to grow. And as your belly starts to grow and the excitement hits that there really is a baby “in there”, you secretly fear that you may never fit in your “skinny clothes” again.

So how much weight should you gain? Should you be concerned that you have gained more weight than your best friend did at her six-month mark? While the experts have differing opinions on how much weight we should gain, the majority seem to think that a person who starts at a normal weight should gain between 25 to 35 pounds during pregnancy.

What may be more interesting than how much weight we should or shouldn’t gain is the estimated destination of this “poundage.” According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG), this is where that weight is going:

Material stores of fat, protein and other nutrients 7 lbs
Increased body fluid 4 lbs
Increased blood 3-4 lbs
Breast growth 1-2 lbs
Enlarged uterus 2 lbs
Amniotic fluid 2 lbs
Placenta 1.5 lbs
Baby 6-8 lbs

Doesn’t it feel good to know that you can rationalize out every pound? You can quit thinking that every pound is attaching itself to your hips or booty, and rationalize that it is just body fluid or an extra pound or two of “boobage” (woot! woot!).

Clingy Cord

Hello-
I wanted to pass along this great product from one of my exhibitors. http://caitimaccreations.com/

How often do you find yourself stopping to pick up items that your child has thrown from the cart or stroller onto the dirty ground or floor? Perhaps your child even seems to make a game of it for you...

Clingy Cords will secure your child's belongings to strollers, highchairs, car seats and even my Comfy Shopping Cart Covers, allowing your child to retrieve cherished items on his or her own.
Clingy Cords are easy to adjust and securely attach to a variety of items, including Baby Bottles, Sippy Cups, a favorite Stuffed Animal or Toy, or other "go-everywhere" items.
Protect your child's favorite items from hitting the floor when they are thrown or dropped with a "One of a Kind" Clingy Cord.

Check out their website.... you will LOVE this product!!

Thank you
Jenn
